BREAKING NEWS!

11/4/07

COMMUNITY POTLUCK HONORING OUR FIREFIGHTERS: On Tuesday, November 6 at 6:30-8:00 you and your family are invited to join the firefighters for a Potluck Dinner at the Firehouse. Please bring a dish to share. It can be homemade or store-bought. The Town Council will provide soft drinks, coffee and bottled water.

Town Council and Fire Auxiliary are sponsoring a community appreciation evening for our dedicated firefighters. Once again our fire department was there for the community, as the monumental firestorms approached our valley. Come share your story of evacuation and hear what our brave firefighters did during those terrible days.

We will be collecting donations to improve the Day Room - living quarters for our firefighters who spend so much time at the firehouse, so bring your checkbook and remember the nicer the place the more likely they will "hang-out" there and that is good for the community.

COMMUNITY HEROS:

Ricky and May Meintjes who brought lots of homemade food to the fire department.

Stephanie and John Migliore for emptying out their cupboards of food for the firefighters and taking care of firefighters' dogs.

Tom Stephenson who has done multiple fly-overs the past three days and helped with the water dump on Mt. Israel.  He is continuing to look out for us.

Jim Depolo who organized the looter watch.

Greg Parman who worked with animal rescue and is an all around vigilant neighbor.

Nancy Reed, Colleen Taggart, Timmy Polleck  – animal watch, animal feeding, trailering many horses out of the valley.

Engineer Mike Shea and Firefighter Dan Aker for figuring out what was wrong with Brush 2861 foam unit. Bob Kephart for fixing it and Firefighter Dan Aker for making sure the fix won't break again.

Firefighter Taylor Larsen for keeping our chainsaws working.

Ken Dubbs was a great help! He brought us doughnuts in the morning on Paint Mountain while we were waiting for the fire to cross the creek.

Eric Anderson and Patty Newton, CERT members, self-activated and helped with the road closure on the west end of district.

FROM Captain Darrin Lee:

The Benjamin's home out near Canyon de Oro had the Barricade already on it.  E2811  first was wondering what was all over the house…then Captain Darrin Lee took a close look at it and also found the Barricade bottles right where they are supposed to be-in the driveway and front door.  E2811 re-applied a coat of water on it, and secured the home.

Numerous homes on Harmony Grove Rd had barricade boxes placed where we could see them.  It made me feel like they cared, and took the time and $$$ to invest in protecting themselves.  A big THANK YOU to them for doing something for themselves that also, in turn, makes our job a bit more tolerable.

It seems like the exceptional people in this world really shine in these types of events, and that makes the “turds” of the world even more visible to us.  We saw a few of those too.

I eat better on fire incidents than I do normally. Thanks to EF residents for adding another 5 pounds.  I need to be measured for a new set of turnouts!

Steve Barker is the man.  He worked for at least 48 hours straight, and he volunteered to go out again to Camp Pendelton Fire.  He is the man.

Karen Gardner - For all her correct and informative Community Email Alerts

Peggy Petitmermet and ALL the BLOCK CAPTAINS for waking up the communities.

And to ALL the people who evacuated on the early side.  This made the job at hand for the fire department much easier. No traffic jams, horse trailers blocking the roads. This made the 100s of trips from one end of the valley to the other faster without the worries of running over residents.

The crew of Brush 2862, Captain Nona Barker with Firefighters Dan Aker, Taylor Larsen and Nick Cardone for cutting up and removing all the down trees on Harmony Grove and Elfin Forest Roads, Sunday night and Monday morning, keeping the evacuation routes open.

The heroes of the year:

The crew of Elfin Forest/Harmony Grove Fire Department Brush 2861
Captain Steve Barker
Engineer Mike Shea
Firefighters Bob Berkey and Henry Vanzzini

AND

San Marcos Fire Department Brush 1462
Captain Marchiso
Engineer Geoff Weaver
Firefighter Tom Kortrouba

These crews were instrumental in stopping the Coronado Hills fire, in extreme adverse conditions.

These crews were assigned to the flank of this fire on Attebury Road.

AND

The helicopters who appeared "out of nowhere" on Tuesday afternoon and stopped the fire that destroyed Del Dios and tried its best to destroy Harmony Grove.  These helicopter crews are the only reason Harmony Grove is still standing.

It is now time to calm our community down. Thankful we did not take a major hit. Lets now think about our neighboring communities and help them.

Nona T. Barker
